ATLANTA, Dec. 6, 2005 – UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced the retirement of Lea
N. Soupata, senior vice president of human resources and a member of the UPS
Board of Directors and the UPS Management Committee.
Replacing Soupata as head of human resources for the nation's third-largest
employer is Allen Hill, who is currently the company's senior vice president
of legal and public affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary. Hill
will retain responsibility for public affairs.
Taking over for Hill is Teri Plummer McClure, currently vice president of
legal for UPS. In addition to her new responsibility as senior vice president
of legal, general counsel and corporate secretary, McClure will oversee the
company's corporate compliance function. She also joins the UPS Management
Committee, the 12-person executive group that oversees the day-to-day operation
of the company.
Soupata is retiring after a 36-year career with UPS, the last 10 as the head
of a human resources function that currently supports more than 400,000 employees
worldwide. During her tenure, UPS was widely recognized for numerous best practices
in areas such as safety, training, workforce planning and diversity. For example:
- UPS has reduced injuries by more than 64 percent since introducing a comprehensive
health and safety process in 1995.
- More than 66,000 people have been hired
off of welfare since UPS became a founding partner in the Welfare to Work
Partnership in 1997.
- A unique education assistance program for recruiting
and retaining part-time student employees has received national recognition.
- UPS has been recognized as the corporation of the year by the NAACP, Urban
League, National Council of La Raza and the Organization of Chinese Americans.
In keeping with the UPS philosophy of giving back to the community, Soupata
serves as the chair of The UPS Foundation and as a trustee of the Annie E.
Casey Foundation, which is the world's largest philanthropy dedicated
to helping disadvantaged children. She also serves as a board member of Junior
Achievement of Georgia, HR Policy Association, St. Basil's Academy and
as a member of the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.
"Lea will be remembered most as a tireless champion of the values and
culture that has served UPS so well for nearly 100 years," said UPS Chairman
and CEO Mike Eskew. "She has been dedicated to ensuring that UPS is recognized
globally as an employer of choice and we are grateful for her substantial contributions."
Allen Hill began his UPS career in 1976 as a part-time package loader and
sorter while attending college. He held positions of increasing responsibility
in operations and human resources before joining the legal group in 1988.
Hill joined the legal department as an employment attorney working with the
human resources function. During that time he was responsible for a wide spectrum
of employment issues, including the development of an OSHA compliance program
and the establishment of an employee dispute resolution process that remains
in effect today. Hill was promoted six years later to coordinator of the corporate
legal group and became department manager of the function in 1995. In 1999,
Hill played an instrumental role in the company's initial public stock
offering, which at the time was the largest in the history of Wall Street.
He has been a member of the UPS Management Committee since 2004.
Hill also serves
as a trustee of The UPS Foundation and is active in other civic and professional
organizations. A native of Decatur, Ala., Hill received his B.A. from Lipscomb
University in Nashville, Tenn., and a J.D. from the Nashville School of Law.
Teri McClure joined the UPS legal department as an employment counsel in 1995.
From 2003 to 2004, while based in Orlando, McClure ran all package delivery
operations in central Florida for UPS prior to being named to head the legal
function in early 2005.
Before joining UPS, McClure practiced labor and employment law in Atlanta,
counseling employers on various state and federal civil litigation matters.
In
addition to her corporate responsibilities and numerous volunteer activities,
McClure serves on the boards of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Mary
Hall Freedom House. A native of Kansas City, McClure received a bachelor's
degree in marketing and economics from Washington University in St. Louis
and a law degree from Emory University School of Law.
"Both Allen and Teri are extremely well qualified for their new leadership
