How to Avoid Shipping Charge Corrections

It’s important to enter accurate shipment details when you create a shipment. Otherwise, you could face additional correction charges after delivery. Here are some tips that can help you avoid common errors and ship as smoothly as possible.

Dimensional Weight

When calculating your shipping rates, consider Dimensional Weight if your package has a large size-to-weight ratio.

Residential Surcharge

A Residential Delivery is delivery to a location that is a home or a home-based business in a residential area, such as a neighbourhood.

UPS shipping systems, such as shipping on UPS.com, UPS CampusShip and UPS WorldShip provide residential/commercial address classification technology, if the shipment is being made to an established UPS delivery address. However, you can avoid Residential Delivery shipping charge corrections by selecting 'Residential Address' when adding a new address or updating an existing address in the address book of your shipping system.

If shipping via UPS WorldShip, users can follow the steps below to automatically perform address classification every time an address is entered:

  1. In the 'Tools' tab, open the 'System Preferences' menu
  2. Select 'Miscellaneous'
  3. Place a checkmark to select the 'Classify Ship To Address as Residential or Commercial' option

If you need further assistance setting up changes to UPS WorldShip to perform address classification of your UPS shipments, please contact the UPS WorldShip support line on 1-888-UPS-TECH 1-888-877-8324.

Incorrect Weight

Incorrect Weight shipping charge corrections occur when the weight of a package is different than the weight indicated at the time of shipping.

To avoid Incorrect Weight shipping charge corrections, use any standard scale and round up any fraction to the next whole pound or kilogram when entering the package weight in your shipping system.

Over Maximum Size

UPS has established specific weight and size limits for the packages sent through our small package delivery network. The limits below only pertain to individual packages. There are no limits to the total weight of your shipment or the total number of packages in your shipment.

These limits apply to most packages and destinations, but there are some variances because of different local restrictions in some countries. Packages that exceed UPS weight and size limits above are subject to an Over Maximum Limits charge.

For more information on international restrictions, including size and weight, view our Import/Export tool.

In order to determine whether your package meets the criteria above, view more information on how to properly measure your UPS package.

Large Package Surcharges

UPS has established specific weight and size limits for the packages sent through our small package delivery network. The limits below only pertain to individual packages. There are no limits to the total weight of your shipment or the total number of packages in your shipment.

A Package is considered a Large Package when its length plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeds 130 inches (330 centimetres) or when a domestic Package length exceeds 96 inches (244 centimetres). Large Packages are subject to a minimum billable weight of 90 pounds (41 kilograms). An additional charge, set forth in the UPS Rates applicable to the Shipment in effect at the time of shipping, will also be applied to a Large Package.

An Additional Handling Fee will not be assessed when a Large Package Surcharge is applied or to UPS
