UPS Healthcare Invests Over €20M in EU Cold Chain Fleet

Boosting temperature-controlled logistics across Europe.

What is New: UPS Healthcare is investing over €20 million to enhance its temperature-controlled fleet, supporting the growing demand for cold chain logistics in Europe.

Why It Matters: With 80% of pharmaceutical products in Europe needing temperature-controlled transportation, this investment enhances UPS Healthcare's capacity to deliver critical healthcare products efficiently and securely.

UPS Healthcare has announced a significant investment of over €20 million to strengthen its cold chain logistics capabilities in Europe. This strategic move includes the addition of more than 200 state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled vehicles to its fleet, which currently stands as the largest in the world with over 1,100 cold chain vehicles.

The demand for temperature-controlled transportation is skyrocketing, with 80% of pharmaceutical products in Europe requiring precise temperature management. UPS Healthcare's investment addresses this need, ensuring that cutting-edge biologics and speciality pharmaceuticals reach their destinations on time and at the proper temperature.

The new vehicles are designed for dual-temperature transport, maintaining conditions between 2 to 8 degrees and 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. This ensures reliable and secure deliveries to wholesalers, hospitals and pharmacies. The GDP-compliant service includes comprehensive vendor management and digital quality management systems, ensuring all customers' quality requirements are met.

‘Whether it is small parcels or large pallets, our pan-European end-to-end cold chain ground network is equipped to manage the most complex healthcare products. From transporting active ingredients to last-mile deliveries to hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies and patients, we provide control, adaptability and real-time monitoring to simplify the most time and temperature-sensitive supply chains’, said Felipe Morgulis, President of UPS Healthcare, Europe and LATAM.

UPS Healthcare's global network of healthcare-compliant distribution space topped 1.7 million square metres in 2023, more than doubling warehouse space compared to 2020. Through acquisitions of Bomi Group, MNX Global Logistics, and Chabas Sante, UPS Healthcare has significantly expanded its end-to-end cold chain capabilities, enabling customers to reach new markets more flexibly.

This investment is a part of UPS Healthcare's broader strategy to support the growing needs of Europe's healthcare industry, with the cold chain market projected to reach $23.7 billion by 2030. By enhancing its infrastructure, UPS Healthcare is well-positioned to capitalise on this growth, providing unmatched service to its customers.
